Makarska is a town of more than 15000 inhabitants that encompasses picturesque villages at the foot of the Biokovo Mountain, including Veliko Brdo, Puharići, Kotišina and Makar (which is where the name of Makarska comes from).
Makarska is one of the most famous tourist destinations on the Croatian coast, attractive for its nature and good climate, rich in tourist attractions and full of hospitable hosts.
Makarska is located below the mountain of Biokovo (1762 m), which protects it from the harsh continental climate and is responsible for its rich Mediterranean vegetation, mild winters, long, warm summers cooled by a refreshing breeze called maestral.
Makarska has more than 2750 hours of sun each year and the air temperature above 20°C from July to September. During these same months, the crystal-clear sea also averages a temperature of above 20°C.
Makarska - Beaches:
The 60 km long Makarska Riviera is dotted with numerous pebble beaches, known for the smooth white pebbles and sandy areas.
Its sandy beach, which is almost 2 kilometers long. The walkways are lined with pine trees and surrounded by luxury hotels, tourist facilities, and gastronomical havens, and there is plenty of fun for both adults and children.

Some of the beaches extend for kilometers, like the one from Brela to Baska Voda.
Tucepi - Nugal Naturist Beach (nudist beach) - This beach is located east of Makarska, just before Tucepi town. Park your car at the big car park at the southernmost end of Makarska habour, just below the abandoned hotel Osojava. Follow path along the coast for about 40 minutes. The walk is a beauty of its own with a breathtaking scenery along the way. Where ever the pathbranches out, be sure to keep to the branch closest to the coast. The path is prepared but quite stony so put stout shoes on. The beach is a pebble beach surrounded by steep cliffs, about 100 meters long, all for naturists. It's a promise - you have never seen a more beautiful beach with cristal clear water. And when you are done with bathing and basking you can look forward to walk the marvellous way back to Makarska.

The city of Makarska grew around a natural harbor protected by a picturesque peninsula of Sveti Petar (St. Peter) and the cape Osejava. It is the only harbor of this kind between the mouth of the Cetina and Neretva rivers. In the past it provided protection and safe harbor during stormy weather to sailors, pirates and merchants, and nowadays it does the same for yachts, sailing boats and tourist ships. During the summer months the harbor fills up with yachts and tourist ships.

Makarska offers many fields for playing various sports. The sport complex Sportski center in the neighborhood of Osejave has soccer and rugby fields, basketball and handball courts, tennis courts, fields for athletics. The tennis center Lucic has nine open and two enclosed tennis courts. The Makarska Riviera hotels have seven inside and eleven outside pools, including those located at the Center for Medical Rehabilitation Biokovka. The Center has an inside pool and a modern gym, as well as a complete facility for physical therapy. Hotel Dalmacija has an outside pool.
The last few years experienced a growing interest in extreme sports, such as paragliding, rock-climbing, extreme hiking, mountain biking, bicycle tracking, and speleology (ex¬ploration of caves).

The extreme water sports include: wind-surfing, diving and parasailing.
The rowing, sailing and fishing clubs are active in the summer. Plans are under way to build an attractive ski resort on Biokovo.
Makarska - Excursions:
Since Makarska is located at the crossroads between road and sea routes, there are regular excursion lines to islands of Brač, Hvar and Korčula, as well as Split, Dubrovnik,Mostar,Imotski and Međugorje during the tourist season (April-November). There are also daily excursions with small boats to the nearby coves combined with attractive gastronomic offer.
Enjoy a walk in the Biokovo mountains. A motor coach will take you early in the morning to the "Vošak" mountain peak. After an approximately 40 minute walk through the beautiful landscape, you will reach the top of an incline, which offers an enchanting view of the nearby islands and the bay of the Makarska Riviera.
Biokovo is the mountain that shelters the town. During history it protected the inhabitants from sea raids and it raised its peaks as an obstacle to the attacks from the land. Today the mountain is a nature park, excursion site with many marked mountaineers paths, unique plant life and numerous animal species. It presents a unique contrast from 2000m high snow peaks to the peaceful coastline. It only takes a half an hour drive through the nature park to reach the peaks with an unforgettable view of the city and the surrounding islands.
A coach drive along the coast, then via a mountain road to Omiš, a small town on the estuary of the Cetina River. This swift mountain river meanders through canyons to reach the sea. A stop will be made at a point above the town offering a magnificent view of the river before we continue with a river cruise to a restaurant for lunch. Local wine and specialities of the area will add to a truly warm atmosphere.
Makarska - Events and Entertainment:
Young people crowd the main Kačić square enjoying entertainment and cultural performances. As the night goes on, Makarska becomes livelier and livelier, and its cafes, restaurants and discotheques fill up.

Galleries - The traces of the art of painting on Makarska region date back to the ancient times. They are mostly found in sacral buildings. The modern painting on the Makarska Riviera has yielded five famous painters: Antun Gojak, Josip Botteri - senior, Petar Kukolj, Ljubomir Videk, and Mladen Veža of Brist, who is by many considered one of the greatest painters of the Croatian visual arts scene.
Museums and Cultural sights - Monuments to Croatian dignitaries, a Franciscan monastery with a world-renowned shell collection, historically preserved structures, parochial churches and fountains, these are just a few of the things visible to the eye of a careful observer. One story, which was written with the chisel, paintbrush and sweat of the Venetian, French, Austrian, Turkish and naturally Croatian craftsmen and artists.
